The all-new integrated Radeon RX Vega 10 graphics accelerator, manufactured by one of the leading tech companies – AMD, can be found in the mobile Ryzen 7 2700U APU. We decided it is the right time to put it side by side with NVIDIA’s dedicated GPU – the GeForce 940MX.

Specs overview

It is not preferable to compare the specifications of the two graphics chips directly as they have different manufacturers that use different technology. Also, the numbers do not always translate into real-life performance.

Starting with the integrated option, the AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 features 10 computing units, which results in 640 shaders in total. Manufactured through a 14 nm technological process, the chip is based on the Vega architecture and ticks at a maximum frequency of 1300 MHz. Due to the fact that it is integrated, Radeon RX Vega 10 shares the memory modules with the CPU – in this case, it benefits from fast dual-channel DDR4 RAM with up to 2400MHz clock. What’s more, the APU which RX Vega 10 is a part of delivers good CPU and GPU performance with a total of 15 W TDP.

Moving on to its rival – the NVIDIA GeForce 940MX is an upgrade from the 940M mobile chip and it now offers a faster GDDR5 memory that uses a 64-bit bus and higher frequencies – they are increased up to 1242 MHz and base 1122 MHz. Based on the GM108 architecture, the chip comes with a total of 384 cores running at maximum clock speeds of up to 1242 MHz. In addition, the chip alone has relatively low TDP of 30 W.

In the graph above you can see an approximate comparison between the two GPUs that can be found in Acer Swift 3 (SF315-41) and Lenovo ideapad 720S respectively. Judging by the results from our benchmark tests, it is a really tight race – Acer Swift 3 (SF315-41) manages to surpass its opponent when it comes to the Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark with around 9%, however, the latter delivers better performance in our Unigine Heaven 3.0 and 4.0 tests (14-16% better).

Conclusion

To sum things up, both GPUs have similar performance judging by the numbers they score in our benchmarks. However, if we have to name a winner, it would be the NVIDIA’s GeForce 940MX graphics card as it shows slightly better results than its rival.
