What is the DJI Osmo Mobile 2?
The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is a smartphone gimbal that is designed to let you achieve cinematic style expansive shots using footage from your phone. It stabilises video captured while moving, and also allows you to achieve professional looking timelapses, hyperlapses, motionlapses and slow-motion footage.
Let’s not mince our words – this is exciting, as it lets you take story-telling from your phone to the next level. In the days of vloggers and Instagram stories, this is not to be sniffed at.
This is the second-generation model from drone and video specialists DJI – let’s take a closer look!
How is the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 different vs the DJI Osmo Mobile?
In a nutshell – it’s lighter, with more intuitive and refined controls, has a massive 15 hours of battery life (three times better than its predecessor), and you can now set your phone up to shoot in portrait mode. And the price is significantly cheaper (check the latest price).
Setting up your DJI Osmo Mobile 2
There are two main stages to setting up – securely attaching the phone to the gimbal, and downloading the app. It can take a bit of time at first (especially if like me, you haven’t used a gimbal before), but once you’ve cracked the technique, it’s easy to set up.
How to balance your smartphone on the DJI Osmo Mobile 2
Before you switch it on, you need to calibrate the device so your phone balances horizontally and vertically. There are instructions included, but save yourself some time and watch DJI’s own instruction video first – you’ll thank me later!
Download the DJI Go app
The DJI Go app allows you to synch the Mobile 2 to your mobile via Bluetooth, enabling you to control your phone’s functionality via the joystick controls.
The app itself is easy to use – function modes are simple to access and it also has editing software, offering some nice, quick outputs if you use one of the pre-made ‘movie templates’. You can export the footage and edit in your normal software.
DJI OSMO MOBILE 2 – MODES AND FEATURES
Improve your everyday video footage
The baseline functionality is to stabilise your video footage – allowing smooth, professional looking hand-held footage. This is particularly useful when filming while walking, climbing, sitting in a moving car etc… You can adjust between ‘walk’ and ‘sports’ modes, which adjusts the gimbal flexibility accordingly.
You can shoot in both landscape and portrait orientation, and can switch between your camera’s front and rear camera easily (although not while recording). Handy features such as ‘Active Track’ allow you to lock focus and track your subject, as Gareth demonstrates in our video above.
For the vloggers out there – you can use the front camera and track yourself, for the ultimate ‘video selfie’ – handy in-fact for any camera-facing video presentation! There’s also a beauty mode included, to make sure you look at your dazzling best!
GET CREATIVE WITH THE DJI OSMO MOBILE 2
How to create a timelapse on your phone with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2
To set up a timelapse you simply choose the frame rate you want to record at (this sets the amount of time that passes between taking each still), and then set the amount of time you wish to film for.
What is handy is that it shows you how much footage this will give – for example 5mins filming at 0.5fps equates to 20 seconds of footage. Adjusting these allows you to manage file length and size.
Set it up on a tripod (the Mobile 2 has a tripod thread on the bottom), press play and away you go!
How to create a hyperlapse on your phone with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2
A hyperlapse is basically a timelapse made on the move. It’s perfect for depicting long journeys on a condensed scale and can be used to show first-person perspective.
Even going back just a few years, creating one using stills was a time-consuming process. With the Mobile 2, simply set up as you would with a timelapse, grab the gimbal and go.
How to create a motionlapse on your phone with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2
Motionlapses can look spectacular, and the DJI Go app allows these to be created with ease. They essentially pan the camera from point A to point B while recording a timelapse. The result can be spectacular; it’s hard at times to believe you are getting such cinematic results from your phone.
As the Mobile 2 will be moving during the exposure(s), you’ll want a tripod to achieve the best results. You can select up to five ‘touchpoints’ throughout the exposure.
The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 allows you to revolutionise the video produced from your phone. If you shoot action, adventure or documentary style videos your footage will look smooth and cinematic, eliminating most camera shake.
The real excitement, however, lies in the Osmo Mobile 2’s ability to unleash your creativity.
Time/Hyper/Motionlapses all look spectacular, and with a tiny bit of planning, you can get stunning results with minimal fuss. Throw in slow-motion, panoramas, and the ability to recreate dollyzoom style shots, and it’s time to get those creative juices flowing.
