Should I Wait for the PS5 or Buy a PS4 Pro Today?

Should I wait for the PS5 or buy a PS4 Pro today? This is a question that I hear from friends, family and coworkers and it’s something I can help you with too.

I’ll walk through what you need to know before you make the decision to buy a new console this year or wait for the PlayStation 5 release date and new features.

It’s easy to get sucked into waiting for the next big thing, like the PS5, and there are some good reasons to wait, but for most shoppers, there is not enough concrete information to wait for the PS5.

The PS4 is just over four years old and the PS4 Pro is a little over year old. The Xbox One X arrived about half a year ago, pulling ahead of the PS4 Pro in power and leaving many wondering if a 2018 PS5 release date is in the cards.

This is as close to a new Microsoft console as we’ve seen in several years and is generating interest in what Sony will do. Sony delivers an incredible selection of exclusive games and owns a lot of market share, leaving a lot of consumers looking for the PlayStation 5.

PS5 Rumor Roundup

There is no PS5 announcement coming at E3 2018 in June. Sony confirmed that they will not show off new hardware at the gaming event in June. This essentially means no PS5 release date in 2018, unless the company schedules a special event right, and even that is unlikely.

When speaking about the PS4 and PS4 Pro games at E3 2017 Shawn Layden, the head Sony Interactive Entertainment in North America, confirmed that the is a PlayStation 5 coming, or at least a new PS5 like device. Layden told that the PS4 will run all PS4 Pro games, but when questioned he said there will probably be some games that only work on a new device. The article is translated from German and Layden never specifically mentions the PS5 by name, but it’s clear Sony is working on the new PlayStation.

PS4 sales are down by 700,000 units compared to a year ago, which may signal a slowdown to the overall trend of the PS4 which is facing a bigger challenge from the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox One X. Still, this is not a sign that a PS5 release date is planned for this fall. Sony’s PS4 Pro gives the company more time before a totally new console. In fact the PS5 release date may be at least two years out. Michael Pachter predicts the PS5 release date may come in 2020.

If these dates are true, the earliest you will hear Sony officially mention a PS5 is at E3 2019, where they could tease the new console. This could impact sales of existing consoles in the 2019 holiday period, but arguably many people who will buy a PS5 on release day already own a PS4 or Xbox One.

The PS5 could come with a new Horizon Zero Dawn installment, Death Stranding, The Last of Us:Part 2, FIFA 21, Madden 21 and arrive in time to get the next Sledgehammer led Call of Duty game.

We don’t have any details on the potential PS5 price, specs or power and don’t expect to get much reliable info on these through leaks until late this year or early next.

With all of this in mind, this is why you should wait for the PS5, and why you should go ahead and buy a PS4 or PS4 Pro in 2018.

Wait if you Already Own the PS4 or Xbox One

Wait if you Already Own the PS4 or Xbox One

Perhaps the best reason to wait for the PS5 is that you already own the Xbox One or the PS4. If you fall into this category you already have access to the most popular games and you will for years to come.

PS4 games look better on the PS4 Pro, but all of the features and all of the games are available on the PS4 as well. There are no PS4 Pro exclusives, and there will not be.

If you own the Xbox One, you’re in the same boat, as all games work on the Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X, with only graphical differences.

These consoles are very capable and have a long life left when it comes to games, accessories, updates and app support. Sony and third parties typically support the old console for at least two years after the new model comes out, so you’ll be able to play all the games up through the PS5 release date and for another year or two. That means you can even wait for price drops.

Wait for New PS5 Features

Wait for New PS5 Features
No matter what console you own, you should wait for the new PlayStation if you want exclusive PS5 features. So far Sony is not confirming any PS5 features, but there are some things you can count on.

Expect real 4K gaming, like the Xbox One X, and possibly a push for delivering higher resolutions down the line. The PS4 Pro doesn’t offer native 4K, but it is something Sony would need to include on the PS5.

We will likely see a PSVR 2 or upgraded PSVR headset that is capable of delivering a better resolution and more realistic virtual reality. There’s also a chance that a more powerful PS5 would ship with the power and specs to negate the need for a separate black box, which could push the price of the PSVR headset down.

Count on a massive power upgrade that developers will be able to use to boost the graphics and capabilities of games on the PS5. We see this with every console upgrade, and it should go beyond just 4K support.

We’ll see and hear more in leaks along the way to the announcement and the PS5 release date.

Don’t Wait If a Far Off PS5 Release Date Bothers You

Don't Wait If a Far Off PS5 Release Date Bothers You
How long are you willing to wait for the PS5? If you are ready to settle in for the long haul and wait more than a year go ahead and wait. If anything longer than that seems like too long to wait, you should probably start looking more closely at the PS4 and PS4 Pro.

According to analyst Damian Thong, the PS5 release date could come as soon as fall 2018, as reported in The Wall Street Journal. More recently Michael Pachter told GamingBolt that the PS5 will not be a full console refresh, that it will play PS4 games and that we won’t see the PS5 release date until 2020.

Sony confirmed they will not announce new hardware at E3 2018, so you won’t be getting a PS5 announcement this year either.

Waiting two years for a new console is very tough. Most gamers should feel safe in picking up a PS4 or PS4 Pro today especially when you consider the deals that you can find on the latest consoles.

Don’t Wait, Get a Great PS4 Deal

Don't Wait, Get a Great PS4 Deal
The PS4 is $299 and the PS4 Pro is $399, but you can find deals that cut the price at least $50 without looking too hard and there are even better deals if you look harder.

If you want a new PS4 or PS4 Pro, check out eBay daily deals where you will often see discounts on the PS4 and PS4 Pro that cut $60 to $70 off the price of a new console. We’ve seen a pre-owned PS4 Uncharted 4 special edition as low as $209 and the brand new gold PS4 Slim 1TB for $319.

GameStop is a good source for refurbished consoles that are as cheap as $239 and you can often find used consoles below $200 locally from people who upgraded to the PS4 Pro or who are switching to the Xbox.

Expect to see massive PS4 and PS4 Pro deals this year around Black Friday and even in the lead up to back to school.

Don’t Wait if You’re Gaming on a PS3 or Xbox 360

Don't Wait if You're Gaming on a PS3 or Xbox 360
If you don’t already have a console that is part of this generation it means you will miss out on a lot of new games that are not coming to the PS3 or Xbox 360. It also means sitting out on some of the best Sony exclusives for a very long time.

This is especially true if you are gaming on an older console because you don’t like buying new consoles at launch due to the high prices, bugs, lack of games and cost of buying new accessories.

We’ve seen most games drop support for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and expect that trend to continue through the next few years. If you keep your PS3 and wait for a PS5, you will miss out on a lot of games.

Instead of waiting for the PS5, buy a PS4 on sale this year, when there is a good trade-in deal, and use it for three years and upgrade when there is a PS5 deal after the release.

Wait for PS5, Buy a PS4 Pro Today

If you want the best looking games, you can buy a PS4 Pro today which allows you to game in 4K with HDR without waiting for the PS5. This newer console delivers better graphics and better performance than the PS4, and if you already invested in a 4K TV with HDR support this is a great way to take advantage of the features you already paid for on your TV.

God of War looks incredible on the PS4 Pro and many other games come with better graphics on the system. This is an excellent upgrade to hold you over to the PS5, and a great upgrade from the original PS4.

If you go this route you can sell your PS4 or trade it in to help cut the price down and the PS4 Pro will hold value well for the next year or two, until we learn about the PS5 specs and release date.
